Kaunaâs visit to Mee Fennie was like a holiday. She enjoyed the time she spent with her little mother and her children. Although Mee Fennie did not give Kauna one of those âdivorce Shangeâ lectures, her nonâverbal message was loud and clear. It was up to Kauna to decide what to do!
On her way home, Kauna stopped by to see her parents again. Her mother was curious to know how her visit had gone.
âSo, what is your small mother saying this time?â
âShe sends her greetings to you all.â
Kaunaâs mother was very suspicious when her daughter did not give her any more information, but at the same time could not bring herself to ask whether Mee Fennie had again advised her to divorce Shange.
âYou look better. It seems as if Mee Fennie took good care of you,â her mother remarked on her daughterâs vibrant appearance.
Returning to Oshaantu was not as frightening this time as it had been on previous occasions. Kauna missed her children and was looking forward to seeing me again. She was a little sad to say goodbye to her relatives and old friends. Her weight had deceived many people.
âYou look much much better this time.â
âWe hear he has changed.â
âWe hear he is not treating you well, but look at you.â
We hear, we hear, we hear! Where do they hear whatever they hear? Kauna thought, irritated.
Kaunaâs father said he would accompany her to the main road to wait for a lift. âChild,â he said, âdonât wait until it is too late. I know your mother wants your marriage to work. But I have seen women who have died in this thing called marriage, or have done things you donât want to hear about. I donât want it to get to this. Donât think of me, or my work. You must do what you think is best for you.â
